Article: Peaches, plums induce death of breast cancer cells, even aggressive type

Peaches, plums induce deliciously promising death of breast cancer cells

COLLEGE STATION -- Breast cancer cells - even the most aggressive type - died after treatments with peach and plum extracts in lab tests at Texas AgriLife Research recently, and scientists say the results are deliciously promising. Not only did the cancerous cells keel over, but the normal cells were not harmed in the process.

AgriLife Research scientists say two phenolic compounds are responsible for the cancer cell deaths in the study, which was published in the

Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry. The phenols are organic compounds that occur in fruits. They are slightly acidic and may be associated with traits such as aroma, taste or color.

"It was a differential effect which is what you're looking for because in current cancer treatment with chemotherapy, the substance kills all cells, so it is really tough on the body," said Dr. David Byrne, AgriLife Research plant breeder who studies stone fruit. "Here, there is a five-fold difference in the toxic intensity. You can put it at a level where it will kill the cancer cells - the very aggressive ones - and not the normal ones."

Byrne and Dr. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos originally studied the antioxidants and phytonutrients in plums and found them to match or exceed the blueberry which had been considered superior to other fruits in those categories.

"The following step was to choose some of these high antioxidant commercial varieties and study their anticancer properties," Cisneros-Zevallos said. "And we chose breast cancer as the target because it's one of the cancers with highest incidence among women. So it is of big concern."

According to the National Cancer Institute, there were 192,370 new cases of breast cancer in females and 1,910 cases in males in 2009. That year, 40,170 women and 440 men died from breast cancer. The World Health Organization reports that breast cancer accounts for 16 percent of the cancer deaths of women globally.

Cisneros-Zevallos, an AgriLife Research food scientist, said the team compared normal cells to two types of breast cancer, including the most aggressive type. The cells were treated with an extract from two commercial varieties, the "Rich Lady" peach and the "Black Splendor" plum.

"These extracts killed the cancer cells but not the normal cells," Cisneros-Zevallos said.

A closer look at the extracts determined that two specific phenolic acid components - chlorogenic and neochlorogenic - were responsible for killing the cancer cells while not affecting the normal cells, Cisneros-Zevallos said.

The two compounds are very common in fruits, the researchers said, but the stone fruits such as plums and peaches have especially high levels.

"So this is very, very attractive from the point of view of being an alternative to typical chemotherapy which kills normal cells along with cancerous ones," Byrne added.

The team said laboratory tests also confirmed that the compounds prevented cancer from growing in animals given the compounds.

Byrne plans to examine more fully the lines of the varieties that were tested to see how these compounds might be incorporated into his research of breeding plums and peaches. Cisneros-Zevallos will continue testing these extracts and compounds in different types of cancer and conduct further studies of the molecular mechanisms involved.      ###

The work documenting the health benefits of stone fruit has been supported by the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center at Texas A&M University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the California Tree Fruit Agreement.

Nutritional Quality of Our Food Source

from: Dr. Mickael Ewald

You passed along a message recently from Annie Heath regarding a slide I use in some of my presentations that addresses the nutritional quality of our food source.  The slide states “If you ate one cup of spinach in 1954, the amount of iron you would receive is comparable to eating 60 cups of spinach today.” And next to that quote I have a picture of the amount of spinach in 1954 compared to 60 cups of spinach in 2003. I think it’s a powerful representation of what is happening to our food chain. I took the picture from a publication called Today’s Chiropractic and it was the November/December 2003 addition. The actual information for this article comes from a book called Empty Harvest, written by Dr. Bernard Jensen and published by Avery Publishing Group. I’ve read the book and it is excellent. Dr. Jensen was a chiropractor and truly a pioneer in whole food nutrition . He wrote many wonderful books, another one I would recommend for Juice Plus distributors is called Foods That Heal. It helps you understand the healing powers of food and why Juice Plus makes so much sense.I have emailed you a copy of that slide so you can send it out to the greater team.
We know that whole food nutrition is defined as the nutritional quality of a food source. We also know that with the evolution of modern agricultural practices our food has become a mere shadow of what it once was. Consequently much of our food lacks the nutritional quality necessary to sustain our health.

This is not a slam on farmers, quite the contrary. Farmers are some of the hardest working folks on the planet. American farmers, the U.S. and Canada produce record harvest and feed much of the world, much of it going to livestock.  There are huge demands placed on farmers to maximize the production of their soil. The demands on soil far exceed the soils ability to nourish the plants grown in that soil year after year. We know that healthy living soil is full of microorganism and all kinds of minerals; nutrients that plants need to grow and thrive. The fact that farmers can’t afford to rest their soil or choose to not incorporate organic methods of farming  causes them to rely on all kinds of chemicals, herbicides and pesticides which destroys the vital microorganisms, fungi  and bacteria that live in the soil and are critical to healthy soil and healthy plants. We are saturating our bodies with drugs to try to stop disease and saturating the Earth with chemicals to try to stop insects and plant diseases. Something must change if we do not want to go in the direction of disease and death.  Something that I learned from a friend of mine about 25 years ago while attending Chiropractic school in Iowa was really very profound. He had a very large farming operation outside of Davenport Iowa and he told me that the soil he farmed had no worms, no earthworms in the soil because of all the chemicals they had to use on the crops. I thought, wow that can’t be good! Earthworms breakdown organic matter in the soil, and deposit as much as seven to eighteen tons per year of nitrogen-rich waste which is a major contribution to renewal of topsoil. They also aerate the soil, which keeps it drained, and aids the penetration of plant roots.

We are destroying our precious topsoil at an alarming rate.  Some of the farmers listening to this message can better explain this than I am but the fact is this: Our soil is exhausted, it is severely depleted of so many precious nutrients, minerals, and other critical components found in healthy soil that plants desperately need.  Consequently the plants grown in much of today’s soil is nutritionally deficient.  Those six or seven foot stalks of corn and those robust looking beans may look good out in the field, but they have lost much of their nutritional value.

So when I share Juice Plus with someone and they tell me they are not interested in Juice Plus because they already eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day I talk to them about the quality of the produce they are buying in their grocery store, and even if I come across that rare person who only eats organic, I still tell them that more is better.
There are so many benefits to eating Juice Plus, obviously the research, the affordability, the simplicity, the quality of the produce from the time it enters the soil to the encapsulation is second to none, so many wonderful things. But one of the greatest benefits is the variety of plants sources you receive by eating Juice Plus. It is more important than ever to get a variety of fruits, vegetables, berries, and grains. The more colorful your diet, the more nutrient dense it is. And that’s exactly what Juice Plus is. It is nutritional intensity from a variety of sources. It is broad spectrum nutrition that allows for an overlapping effect of nutrients from many sources. Is Juice Plus in place of eating a diet rich in plants? Absolutely not! But it is a great way to bridge that gap that much of today’s produce does not offer. Juice Plus truly is the next best thing to fruits and vegetables.
We know that Juice Plus comes from the highest quality plant sources on the planet. Our Juice Plus produce is not exposed to the harmful effects of pesticides and herbicides, which not only protects us from the harmful effects of these chemicals, but  all those vital things that live in the soil as well. We know that Juice Plus has long standing contracts with many of their farmers that grow our Juice Plus produce . And because there is very little time between harvesting the produce and encapsulation, Juice Plus is picked at peak ripeness. I heard John Blair say recently that our partners who grow our produce appreciate the NSA philosophy, and that is: Quality comes first, no matter what! NSA sets the standards and dictates to the farmers what they expect.  And NSA insures that these Standards are followed: Juice Plus is taking it to the highest level.
- meets and exceeds GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). C GMP
-Juice Plus mandates very high documentation practices
-Juice Plus undergoes a total quality control program that begins in the soil and continues throughout the entire chain up to the point it enters your mouth.
From a safety standpoint:
-No Herbicides or pesticides
-No Irradiation of their produce
-No banned substances
-No Preservatives
-Gluten Free
-Non GMO
undergoes a proprietary process where Juice Plus is exposed to heat and cold for only a few seconds.
Juice Plus is an amazing food source. It truly is the next best thing to fruits and vegetables and you can get a months supply for around $40! What a bargain.
